TWINS -for Maple in Minneapolis-
2011
Ceramics
2,500 × 300 × 600 mm

Description
TWINS Series In today’s world, mass production creates all sorts of uniformity and erases originality and we are consuming in large scale. We unconsciously try to choose goods that are different and special when we go shopping at stores.
In the world of nature repeat reproduction occurs on a daily basis, but it seems different from what we produce in our society. I wonder if things can make us happy.
I was always fond of cars since I was a child. I could recognize small differences among the same kinds of cars. One might feel odd when you find someone who is wearing the same clothes as yourself, but they are actually similar items but not the same.
In the world filled with similar things, I have became very interested in a set of two, which has a very curious well-balanced existence. Two is plural, but can exist as a set of two. Twins look alike but are two completed matters. They are original, but are copies at the same time. I understand one set twins is born in every one hundred babies. My father is a twin.

Description
Sometimes you look at an object, and it makes you wonder what it used to be in the past. Ceramics once was a most modern new media. It makes me feel the process when clay becomes a ceramic piece is similar to the change of time. I wanted to express how Kanazawa, an old traditional city, in my own way. I made a fish tank that looks like an old fashioned TV and put a gold fish in there to create the illusion that the fish was getting information or music from the radio. Kutani-yaki has things hard to see printed on it’s body just as the word, Kutani, associates in your mind. I have also included taped physical exercise tape from the city of Kanazawa and edited it without sound. I have created a hybrid place, 21st century garden using mass communication medias, sounds, language, and letters.

Japan is known as a car production country. This country is supported by the car society, one can say. We might not recognize our country while in our country. Sometimes one might feel Japan when one is away from Japan. I wanted to take a look at the relationship of things and shapes by using Renault and Nissan.

I am not very fond of high places, but adore big and gorgeous things like Tokyo Tower. I wonder how people must have felt when it was first built. It will be replaced by a taller tower in the near future. I believe this ordinary scene with this tower will give us peace in our heart when the alternation of generations occurs. I have created Tokyo Tower by using cell phones that are most common items in today’s society. People feel comfortable by connecting with the others on cell phones.
