Description
Rooftop gardens are increasingly popular in Japan. After joining a long rat race that brought the economic expansion as well as the destruction of nature, perhaps people in this country have finally realized the difficulty of living in the environment without harmony. To find solace of greenery in urban life, they began to create their own ecosystem within the limited space ‘True cities’ have started to grow.

Lilies −The Meaning of Living−
Lilies −

2012
Japanese paper, Indian ink(sumi), gold leaf, aluminum, others.
W500 × H1,120−930 × D400 mm

Many women left their hometown and migrated to make a living.
Lilies are often depicted to symbolize purity. However, in contrast to their image, they release sensual scent; a catalyst for reproduction.
Lilies are like women. Behind our virginal smile, we may offer a glimpse of mature woman with our sensual allure. This dual nature is our strength and beauty in order to survive in this world.

Dear Friend

2011
Inkjet on Japanese paper, acrylic case, resin, cotton yarn, others.
W1,855 × H715 × D185 mm

Description
After earthquakes and tsunami hit the eastern coast of Japan in 2011, the region was covered with bricks and mud. I wanted to present the energy that colors can offer to those who suffer from the tragedy. I did not want them to force back their emotions and feelings. The image of this work is spring - the season that embraces ‘ life’. I used cherry blossom pink, fresh leaf green and yellow that illuminates the atmosphere. Was it the falling cherry petals or somebody throwing a pebble that made the water surface ripple ? Waves can be created by the smallest incidence. Carp are believed to bring on happiness. I turned carp into shoes, and made them represent us human beings.
Neither a lucky charm nor an icon can bring us happiness in the true sense. It is only our might that can do so.

On the Subject of Happiness −What is True Happiness?−

2011
Japanese paper, colours, acrylic pigment, leather, others.
W1,080 × H450 × D40 mm

Description
After earthquakes and tsunami hit the eastern coast of Japan in 2011, I have come to reevaluate the meaning of true happiness. In this work, the high heel shoes, surrounded by various colorful vegetables such as pumpkins, turnips, and lotus roots, symbolize women; ladybugs and dragonflies, insects that supposedly bring about happiness, symbolize men. Eventually they become couples and bear children. The vegetables represent new life and fertility. Families are created and generations thrive. I created this work in the hope of fertility and prosperity of descendants.

Bee
2005
nylon yarn, acrylic yarn, others.
W245 × H140 × D90 mm

Description
This is a piece from a series of work called ‘ Entomological Specimen for Adults ‘. In the series, I tried to express my excitement when I achieve harmony between the image of the motif and surface of the material.
When we were younger, we used to catch our favorite insects and added them into our entomological specimen. Today we line up rows of shoes and take pleasure in gazing at the collection - the shoes we collected regardless of their functionallty.
